Bookcase Styling 101

Bookcase styling

Have you ever stared at a bookcase and wondered how on earth you could fill it? Yup, us too! These days, bookcases not only serve as storage for reading materials, but they also serve as PRIME display space in your home. They also serve as a space to share a little bit of your personality and style. Decorating your bookcase to make it both functional and pleasing to the eye can feel daunting, but read on as we share our JGS top five tips on how to style a bookcase.

Let’s get vertical

When you begin your styling process, start with items like tall vases, tall picture frames, and candle sticks since they will take up vertical space. Once you have your backdrop, you can add in the smaller items later.

Stack with style

To add interest to your reading materials, alternate stacking books horizontally and vertically. One of the best ways for decorating bookcases is to use accessories, such as picture frames or candles as bookends.

Plants are always a great addition

I personally love plants. They add color and vibrance to the area. Placing a few small, potted succulents or small leafy plants throughout the shelves will give it an organic touch and offset the linear look of a bookcase.

Less is more

You might think the more accessories you add, the nicer the bookcase will look. But that is not the case! Resist the urge to pack in a ton of accessories on every shelf. It’s important to leave a bit of open space on some of the shelves for a balanced and clean look. You should also choose a one-color or tone-on-tone scheme. This balance will give more impact to your styling.

Change is good

Like you would decorate your home for every season, you can change up your accessories for your bookcase, as well. The beauty of open bookcases is that you can display your favorite items of the season or moment.
