Outdoor Spaces: Entertaining + Extended Living

Outdoor furniture decor

These days, especially through the pandemic, outdoor living spaces have been critical to our lives. We have recognized that they are both a place for entertaining, but also a way to EXTEND our living spaces. Because they are the new “it” zone, they can and should be as useful, comfortable, and stylish as your interior living spaces.

Whether you have a large patio, a tiny deck or even just a courtyard garden, there is so much you can do to blend a little of the indoors, outdoors! Here are JGS’s top tips to consider when designing your outdoor space.

#1 - Cover Yourself!

To make your outdoor space as comfortable as possible through the seasons, it is important to ensure you will be protected from the sun or rain by designing a roof over your outdoor space. If adding a roof structure is a challenge, try adding a pergola to provide a bit more shade. .

#2 - Fine Furniture

To ensure your outdoor space is the best it can be, choose both comfortable and sturdy furniture.  Focusing on comfort doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style! Pick stylish pieces that aren't overly bulky and wouldn't be out of place in a living room. Add an outdoor rug and a side table to the mix and you've got the perfect, space for outdoor entertaining or lounging.

#3 - Greens Please

One of the attractions to outdoor spaces is being one with nature. But sometimes your rooftop terrace or small patio has no trees in sight. This is where plants come into play. Add garden plants to your space whether on your table or in a corner. Connect with your local plant shop to find what types of plants are best suited to your climate.

#4 - Light Up the Night

The key to creating an inviting and cozy outdoor area is by adding lighting.  Try stringing lights to your pergola or roof to set the mood or add some tea lights or pillar candles to your tables. Another great option is to add lighting to your garden to truly set the mood.

#5 - Sweater Weather

When you create an outdoor living space, you want it to be appropriate for use in all seasons by creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere. This doesn’t mean you have to have a fireplace! Fire pits are a great option too. You’ll also want to outfit your space with plenty of blankets in different colors and weights.
