Choosing The Right Pillows

Choosing the right pillows for your couch

Whether the season is changing, or you simply want to see a change in your home, having the right formula for changing your sofa pillows is important. I often go down the rabbit hole when looking for pillows as there’s such an overwhelming selection out there.

Here are JGS’s top tips to consider when choosing the right pillows for your sofa. Let’s dive in!

Tip #1: Choose a pillow with a pattern that you love! Be sure the pattern has the color of your sofa in it. You’re going to get the most impact if all of your pillows are either in the same shade or in a pair of complementary shades as your sofa. If you love seasonal pillows you can swap out different patterns based on the season or holiday. Try your patterned pillow in a 20”x 20” or 18”x 18” size.

Tip #2: Choose a coordinating solid colored pillow. Pick this color from one that’s in your patterned pillow. This pillow should be larger or the same size as your patterned pillow. We like to use a 22”x 22” pillow.

Tip #3: Mix it up on different pieces of furniture in the same space. You don’t need to use the same combination of pillows on each sofa. Try using the same solid colored pillow on each sofa and then a different pattern on each.

Tip 4: Choose the right sized pillow inserts. You always want an insert, whether down or down-alternative, to be 2” LARGER than the pillow cover. So if you are buying an 18”x18” pillow cover, be sure the pillow insert is a 20”x 20”. Who knew?

Tip#5: Don’t go overboard! Trust me when I say you don’t want to sit down on a couch that is so packed with pillows that it feels overcrowded. At the end of the day, don’t forget that you or your guest will sit on the sofa -- not just admire it from a distance, so comfort is key! Pretty straightforward and simple!
