Finding Original Art for Your Home

How to select original art for your home

Pablo Picasso once said; “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” True to his words, art plays a big role in our lives and homes. Finding the right art to fit your home might not always be easy as there are many things to consider such as space, style, color and furniture. Read on for guidance on finding the perfect art for your home.

Do research: The hardest part about finding art is knowing what to look for. Before purchasing a new piece of art, you can find inspiration by sifting through Pinterest, Instagram and design magazines.

Tell a story: If you’re going to have a piece of art that will be prominently featured in your home, make sure it’s something that you can tell a story through. In other words, seek out art that captures your personality and says who you are to your guests. You can also choose a piece that will bring you back to fun memories or experiences.

Pick your spot & measure it: It’s important to determine where you want your art piece to go. Pick out the most visible wall in your home. You don’t want to add art to an already busy area. Once you decide on a specific spot on your wall to fill, take your measurements and the dimensions in mind when looking for a piece. Remember to also leave some space or breathing room by leaving adequate space around the frame when taking your measurements.

Watch for color and style: People often feel like their art has to match with the theme or color of their home. Avoid that matchy-matchy concept. While it’s good to draw out one of the boldest colors in your room, the colors don’t have to be exactly the same, instead they should complement or contrast the space.

And, let’s say you find a bold piece with a lot of bright color and texture, you can make it work in your home by dialing down some of the brighter elements in the room for balance. For instance, you can add in neutral curtains so your piece doesn’t get lost in the room.

Shop: There are endless possibilities when it comes to finding places to buy art. Look for local arts fairs and visit every artist booth to find the perfect piece. You can also look for local gallery openings or browse online. You can also go on Instagram to see which artists your favorite designers are following. There are a plethora of opportunities to find art!

And, if you don’t find what you’re looking for, no problem! Consider commissioning an artist to create a custom work.

These are just several of the many choices our clients have when trying to find original art for their home. We follow many independent artists both locally and around the country. Please contact JGS today to discuss your future art search.
